Canadian University Fair

First contact for the next step

Representatives from nearly 50 institutions packed Shawnigan's new gym on Tuesday evening for a Canadian university admissions fair.

In partnership with other local schools, including Brentwood College, Brookes Shawnigan Lake, Aspengrove, and Queen Margaret's, the fair connected roughly 300 students plus scores of parents with representatives from Canada's diverse post-secondary world.

For Grade 11s, the fair facilitated initial conversations with students and potential destinations. For 12s, the event served to help solidify choices, plus provide further information about considerations like academic programs, scholarships, athletics, residence, and campus life.

Shawnigan Guidance Counsellor Alison Dewis says the university reps provided tremendously positive feedback on the students who came, recognizing that the candidates had clearly done their research and had come prepared to ask pointed, relevant questions. She also says the fair may have nudged some students to consider new options that may end up being a better fit for them.

The Shawnigan Guidance Office also organizes smaller visits to specialized schools plus events for post-secondary institutions in the U.S. and the U.K.
