Silver Screen Showcase

A filmmakers' fair in Victoria

Students of filmmaking took a peek inside the world of professional filmmaking during a Saturday conference in Victoria.

Hosted at UVic's Student Union Building, the Reel Careers in Film and Media fair aimed to connect aspiring filmmakers with industry professionals and expose them to a variety of career paths within the industry.

The event included workshops, panel discussions, and exhibits from professionals working in a more than 20 different film-related roles. A panel discussion with a group of actors proved particularly eye-opening, as the performers shared their personal, practical, and non-glamourized look at life in front of the camera.

Shawnigan's contingent of three students and two staff members also enjoyed the screening of several short films, after which they were able to engage one-on-one with the filmmakers about their experiences and the process of actually making movies.

We acknowledge with respect the Coast Salish Peoples on whose traditional lands and waterways we live, learn and play. We are grateful for the opportunity to share in this beautiful region, and we aspire to healthy and respectful relationships with those who have lived on and cared for these lands for millennia.
