Juan de Fuca Trail

Outdoors expedition
Shawnigan’s Outdoors group headed off-campus Oct 20-21 for an expedition to the Juan de Fuca Trail, which follows 47 kilometres of wilderness stretching along the western shoreline of southern Vancouver Island.

With the knowledgeable leadership of Outdoors Coordinator Eric MacDonald, Search & Rescue Instructor Kelsey McDaniel, and Assistant Director of Renfrew Kristen Turner, the outdoors enthusiasts enjoyed two days of beautiful fall weather exploring one of Vancouver Island’s most rewarding long-distance hiking trails, taking in temperate rainforest, rocky beaches and other varied terrain.

With unparalleled access to nearby trails, lakes and mountains, Shawnigan students are situated in a perfect environment in which to learn about and enjoy a range of outdoor activities such as sea and whitewater kayaking, sailing, camping, cross-country skiing, environmental stewardship and ethnobotany, orienteering and wilderness skills.

By engaging in a wide variety of outdoor pursuits, students have a unique opportunity to build special bonds with their companions, take time to rest and reflect in nature, learn and use valuable outdoors skills, become comfortable exploring and travelling through varied terrain, and gain a strong sense of confidence in their own skills and abilities.
