New Media visits Brentwood
Discussing literary devices across ages and schools
A new partnership is growing from the pages of contemporary literature.
On Wednesday and Thursday, Mr. Tim Coy took two of his New Media 11 classes to work with Grade 8s at Brentwood College School.
In advance of the visit, the groups had sent videos back and forth, as the Shawnigan seniors helped explain literary elements such as plot, theme, setting, and symbolism.
The novel they studied was The Cat at the Wall, by Deborah Ellis – a 2015 novel that sees protagonist Claire, an American teenager, killed in a traffic accident and reincarnated as a cat in the war-torn West Bank.
This week's visits helped facilitate the continuation of a literary mentorship, as the Shawnigan students guided Brentwood's Grade 8s through literary devices including onomatopoeia, alliteration, allusion, hyperbole, simile, metaphor, personification, understatement, and euphemism.
We acknowledge with respect the Coast Salish Peoples on whose traditional lands and waterways we live, learn and play.
