Student leadership conference

Shawnigan hosts CAIS event

Aspiring leaders honed their abilities as Shawnigan hosted a forum themed 'Thinking outside the box.'

More than 120 senior students from CAIS (Canadian Accredited Independent Schools) institutions across the country arrived on Saturday, most of them generously billeted by members of the Shawnigan community.

For the next four days, the young people attended keynote speeches from influencers including Val Latwin, Oliver Finlay, Ruddy Ndina, and Fiona MacFarlane. After these presentations, the students would head to breakout sessions, where they would brainstorm about their key takeaways. Themes include 'Turning the triangle upside down," "Open-mindedness," and "We must be better as a country."

Other events included workshops from Shawnigan staff and visiting advisors, tours of Shawnigan facilities, including the observatory and the Mark Hobson Hatchery, and recreational opportunities such as yoga, rock climbing, robotics, and bonfires.

Largely planned by students for students, the conference prioritized networking opportunities for young people, culminating in a dance and social on the final evening.
