Sports Update

A busy sports weekend
It was a busy weekend for Shawnigan athletes, with eleven of our teams in action on the field, court, or ice.

The grade 8 and 9 rugby teams kicked off their respective seasons against visiting teams from St. George’s School. These early games are formative for new players as they learn the game and make new friendships.

Our junior and senior soccer teams both had strong performances against local independent schools over the weekend. “We are still in our build up phase prior to our big league games,” said Mr. Sturrock, Head of Soccer. “Both squads have attempted the current process and bought into the concepts involved.”

The Midget Prep ice hockey team travelled to Penticton to play two games, winning one handily (6-1) and losing the other. While in the Okanagan, they had the opportunity to take in a Junior A level game played between the Vernon Vipers and the Cowichan Capitals. With four Shawnigan graduates represented between the two teams, it was an exciting game to watch! In total, 10 Shawnigan grads played in Penticton last weekend, making it a bit of a reunion.

The Junior B girls field hockey team travelled to Duncan to participate in the John Ferreira Memorial Tournament. These novice players competed in just their second and third games ever, playing against top teams from other schools. Although they lost both of their games, the coaches from both sides were impressed. “We were very proud of how the girls persevered and kept giving it their all, right to the end,” said coach Mrs. Sykes. “And I think they all had a fun time!”
