Head coach wins award
Blair Sturrock, former professional soccer player and head coach for both Shawnigan's boys' and girls' soccer programs, has been awarded the Brian Craig Memorial Award by the Central Vancouver Island Athletic Association.
This annual award, presented in memory of beloved Cowichan Valley teacher and coach Brian Craig, recognizes coaches who promote fair play and positive competitiveness amongst their athletes and who lead with an attitude of care, sincerity and respect.
“Blair has consistently gone above and beyond with his soccer teams while also exemplifying the qualities of sportsmanship and fair play at all times; he is an incredibly positive and talented coach who is a fantastic role model for our students,” shares Director of Athletics Tim Murdy. “Blair has continued to provide our students with positive messaging and instruction during this very difficult time, engaging students with weekly fitness and skill challenges, video demonstrations and calm, positive instruction.”
Mr. Sturrock started his soccer career as a trainee for Dundee United in 1998 and went on to play 13 seasons of professional soccer in England. He then signed with the Victoria Highlanders in the North American USL PDL league and remained with the league as a player and then coach until 2016. In addition to coaching at Shawnigan, he is a coach for the Lower Island Soccer Association.
