Grade 8 Outer EDGE

Keeping it local
While the formative Grade 8 Outer EDGE experience at the beginning of each year is normally characterized by a camping trip to Horne Lake Caves, this year presented an opportunity to stay local, exploring the beauty in Shawnigan’s own back yard.

Keeping to their House cohort groups, Grade 8 students have been exploring the Cowichan Valley area together on foot, enjoying the natural splendor of Vancouver Island. Led by student prefects, the Grade 8s ventured out on the trails around Shawnigan’s campus, hiking through the back woods to the Koksilah River. Once there, they took some time to rappel down steeper sections of the river bank and explore the shoreline.

The hike back to campus brought the groups to Camp Yates—an area in the wilderness towards the back of campus designated for School community and co-curricular outdoors use—where they built camp fires and enjoyed some well-deserved snacks.

Shawnigan Lake School is adhering to all COVID-19 guidelines released by the BC Ministries of Health and Education, including those regarding learning cohorts, physical distancing and mask-wearing when appropriate.
