Back Together

Winter term commences
School Prefect Finn R.’s uplifting message of hope and solidarity perfectly captured the tenor of feeling across Shawnigan’s campus this week, as students and staff excitedly returned to the classroom after a transitory week of online SOUL learning.

Students were able to enjoy a break from the wet weather that often characterizes a West Coast winter, with some warming winter sunshine illuminating the first green shoots of snowdrops and crocuses that are beginning to appear across the campus grounds.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day was recognized on campus on Monday, with the Reverend Jim Holland holding a SOUL Man video discussion with School Prefect and Renfrew Head of House Timi A. about education, racial justice and the importance of supporting and encouraging conversation and action around social issues and inequality.

With in-classroom learning and co-curriculars resuming on Monday, students also returned to some athletic action on Tuesday. While sports currently look a little different at Shawnigan, with workouts and drills being managed according to BC Ministry of Health safety protocols, there have still been abundant opportunities for students to enjoy plenty of fresh air and outdoor exercise.

Meanwhile, the Friesen Centre café, which students have voted to name “Duke’s” in honour of recently retired entrepreneurship teacher Gary Dukelow, is now open and serving up mochas, lattes and Americanos to ward off any remaining winter chill.

Shawnigan Lake School is adhering to all COVID-19 guidelines released by the BC Ministries of Health and Education, including those regarding learning cohorts, physical distancing and mask-wearing when appropriate.
