Grade 8 Expedition

Together with the School Prefects and a handful of energetic staff, Shawnigan’s youngest students participated in a time-honoured tradition during the first week of term: the Grade 8 Expedition. This multi-day adventure trip is an important part of the Shawnigan journey for our Grade 8 students and is one of the first opportunities for the new School Prefects to test their leadership skills.
The group stayed a little closer to home than usual this year – but when you live on a lake in a rainforest, the opportunities for adventure are endless! The days were spent exploring the wilderness as a team, hiking local trails, and canoeing on Shawnigan Lake. The nights were spent at two sites – Camp Yates, located at the farthest reaches of our campus boundaries, and Camp Pringle, a facility located further down the lake.

Everyone was thrilled to have beautiful weather for the first two days of adventure, with the final evening bringing with it a downpour of west coast rain that continued through the final day – making their return home to the cozy rooms (and warm showers!) in Stanton and Levien Houses that much sweeter.

Despite the soggy ending, the expedition was an absolute success, with Grade 8s and Prefects alike returning from this formative experience with memories that will last a lifetime and new friendships that will carry them through the remainder of their Shawnigan careers.

Shawnigan Lake School is adhering to all COVID-19 guidelines released by the BC Ministries of Health and Education.
