Caring Capstone Projects

Each year the Grade 12s complete their Senior Capstone project, and this year Reese A. ’21 wanted to become more involved in community service and local volunteer work. For the first part of her project, she decided to collaborate with a local organization, Cowichan Neighborhood House, to raise money for local families around the Christmas season. Each year they run a Christmas Hamper program, where they buy and pack gift boxes for local families in need, then deliver them around Christmas.
Christmas is something that has always been very important to Reese, but recently she has become more aware of how fortunate she is to have gifts, food, shelter, and to be around family every year at the holidays. Through her project, her hope is to support local families, as well as raise awareness to her fellow students at the School of how much they have to be grateful for and how lucky they are. Through a pyjama dress-up day, as well as a charitable food sale, Shawnigan students and staff raised $900 for Cowichan Neighborhood House to go towards local families.

This week, students Sofie S, Mak R, and Lexxi S joined Reese as they volunteered in 'Santa's Workshop', where they packed Christmas hampers for these local families. It was eye-opening for the students to see first-hand the need in the local community, as well as realize the impact their actions can have on others. Shawnigan's donation to Cowichan Neighbourhood House will directly help a number of local families. It is truly amazing how our School community comes together to recognize our privilege and work towards supporting others in our community.

Shawnigan Lake School is adhering to all COVID-19 guidelines released by the BC Ministries of Health and Education.
