Last basketball before the break

Shawnigan basketball teams have packed in some final tournament play before the Christmas break.

The senior girls entered Duncan Christian School's Welcome Back Tournament, finishing third out of ten teams.

The girls opened the tournament with a comfortable victory over the host team, with Avery C. singled out for her outstanding defensive effort.

In their next game, the girls couldn't repel a late push from Alberni, falling 63-62.

Shawnigan closed out the tournament with a 55-33 win over Kwalicum.

Milena J. was named a tournament all-star.

The senior girls are now idle until Jan. 11.

The junior boys had a particularly strong effort at the 2nd annual Dover Bay tournament.

The boys opened the event with wins over Wellington and John Barsby.

Advancing to the semifinals, Shawnigan earned a narrow victory over Carihi.

The squad then claimed the tournament title with a 59-43 win over a big, tall Vanier team.

The junior girls also tasted their final competition until January, as they headed to the MIT tournament at Vancouver's Mulgrave School.

The girls finished the event with a 1-2 record, good enough for third place overall.

Coach Ronnie Brown says her entire team played fantastic defence, singling out Mikayla B. and Samantha L. for their stellar play.
