Tournaments in Victoria, Vancouver, and Courtenay

Shawnigan's senior boys placed second in the Victoria Police Tournament at SMUS this weekend.

On Thursday, the squad defeated Maple Ridge in an exciting 78-70 overtime finish. Dru-Leo L. finished with a team high of 38 points while Sergio P. had 16 points.

On Friday, Shawnigan pulled out a 73-67 semifinal win against New Westminster with solid defense in the last minute of regulation time. Sergio had 17 points and 16 rebounds, Dru-Leo added another 16 points and Shawn L. scored 10 points.

The team was challenged in Saturday’s final game against King George and finished with the 2nd place trophy.  Scott L. had a strong game for Shawnigan, scoring 12 points.

Sergio P. and Dru-Leo L. also earned acclaim for their play, receiving tournament All -Star awards.

Meanwhile, the senior girls faced some tough competition in stormy Courtenay.

The girls opened with a 67-50 victory over John Barsby, with Milena J. named player of the game in a 30-point performance.
Shawnigan then suffered losses to Mark Isfeld and Royal Bay, with Kiara S. and Tatum H. named players of the game, respectively.

Coach Darrin Austin says his goal was to ensure court time for all players, and he felt positive about the tight scorelines in the two losses.

The School's two junior teams both ventured to Vancouver for their respective ISA Championships.

Hosted by Mulgrave School, the junior boys event saw Shawnigan facing Southridge in the opening game of the tournament. Thanks to some key three-pointers late in the game, Southridge was able to pull away, ultimately going on to win the tournament.

After the loss to Southridge, Shawnigan came up with a strong team effort in a 41-20 win over West Point Grey Academy, earning a spot in the consolation final.

Wrapping up the tournament, Shawnigan was played tough by rival Brentwood, but responded with strong defence and a particularly solid start to the second half, earning a 51-38 victory.

Played at York House School, the junior girls event saw Shawnigan suffer two early losses before rebounding on Saturday morning.

On Friday, the girls fell to strong teams from SMUS and Southridge. The girls then faced Mulgrave on Saturday morning, earning a comfortable win.

Coach Ronni Brown singled out Catherine A. for her play all tournament, adding that newcomer Lauryn L. fit in quickly and played well.
