Legacy Giving

Why a Legacy gift?

Including Shawnigan Lake School in your long-term financial or estate planning is an important decision. It’s one that encompasses more than financial goals and tax benefits. It’s about harnessing your passion to make a lasting impact on the people and places important to you.

Legacy gifts are as unique as the people whose passion and creativity inspire them to give. Whether you want to endow a scholarship for future students or give a boost to a particular program, legacy gifts provide meaningful support to Shawnigan while helping you achieve your own personal goals.

You may be surprised how big an impact you can make. Shawnigan offers a range of imaginative giving strategies that allow you to unleash your “inner philanthropist” while at the same time maximizing tax advantages and financial flexibility.

Legacy giving to Shawnigan can be tailored to your own unique financial circumstances. Your advisor, lawyer or tax planner can help you find the way that works best for you and your family.

Types of Legacy Gifts

List of 6 items.

  • Bequests

Naming Shawnigan Lake School as a beneficiary of your will can, when properly planned, reduce the rate at which your estate is taxed. You may make a charitable bequest of a specific dollar amount, or a percentage of your estate or the remainder of your estate after planning to care for your family and friends. Alternatively, you might prefer to give a particular asset.

    Examples Wordings:
    • “I give to Shawnigan Lake School Foundation the sum of $ XX, XXX to be used for general purposes as determined by its Board of Directors.”
    • “I give to Shawnigan Lake School Foundation 50% of the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate to be used for general purposes as determined by its Board of Directors.”
    • “I give to Shawnigan Lake School Foundation my shares of XYZ stock.”
You can indicate a specific purpose for your request and may also specify whether it be made available for immediate use or held permanently as endowment. Your estate will be entitled to a donation receipt for the full value of the bequest, which can have a significant impact on your final income tax return.
  • Gifts of Life Insurance

A gift of life insurance can make a significant future impact on the School at a very modest cost to you today. There are several ways you can use life insurance as a vehicle for contributing to Shawnigan.

You may give the death benefit of a life insurance policy simply by naming the Shawnigan Lake School Foundation as the beneficiary.

If you make Shawnigan Lake School Foundation the owner and beneficiary of a new or existing policy, you will be entitled to a donation receipt for the cash value of the policy (if any) and for each premium paid. At your death, the proceeds received by the Foundation will far exceed the total value of your premiums paid.

In each instance, your estate will receive a donationn receipt for the full value of the policy proceeds paid to the Shawnigan Lake School Foundation at your death.
  • Gifts of Shares

If you own publicly traded securities (ie. stocks, bonds, mutual fund units or shares) that have appreciated in value, it may be advantageous to donate them directly to Shawnigan, rather than cashing them and making a donation. Why? If you donate the securities directly to Shawnigan, you don’t pay capital gains on the appreciated value of the shares, and you receive a charitable tax receipt for the value of the shares.
  • Outright Gifts

An outright gift is a contribution of cash, securities, real estate or tangible property in which the donor retains no interest and can be used immediately by Shawnigan Lake School.

A gift of real estate can be an effective way to make a significant gift to Shawnigan without touching your capital or income. Almost any marketable real estate is suitable, and may entitle you to an income tax deduction for the property’s full appraised fair market value.
  • Charitable Remainder Trusts and Gifts of Residual Interest – Gifts that Give Back!

There are many specialized forms of giving available to donors today. For example, you can make a meaningful gift to the Shawnigan Lake School Foundation through a charitable remainder trust or a gift of residual interest.

A charitable remainder trust is a deferred giving arrangement under which you can irrevocably transfer property (cash, securities or real estate) to a trustee. You retain the right to the income from the trust, either for life or a specified term of years, and at the end of that time the trust principal becomes your gift to Shawnigan. You receive a donation receipt for the present value of the remainder interest, and you may designate your contribution for use in a particular program, or that it be held as endowment.

A gift of residual interest “gives back” in a different way. You may donate your residence but retain the right to occupy it for life, or give a work of art and continue to enjoy it during your lifetime. In each case you receive a donation receipt for the present value of the “residual interest” you have given to Shawnigan.
  • Charitable Gift Annuities

Charitable gift annuities enable you to make an immediate gift to Shawnigan and receive guaranteed income for life.
Shawnigan Lake School appreciates all contributions received from interested donors and offers recognition benefits and privileges appropriate to each gift. Our Advancement Office is committed to helping you and your loved ones select the giving options that are most appropriate and effective for you – choices that will enrich your life today, protect the interests of your family members tomorrow, and assist Shawnigan in delivering its mission, both in the present and in the future.

The Legacy Society is Shawinigan’s donor appreciation program for planned giving. It was established to recognize the generous philanthropy of alumni, faculty, staff, parents and friends, who, each year, support Shawnigan through their contribution of a deferred gift.
