At Shawnigan, we prioritize flexibility when it comes to computing devices permitted on campus. Students have the option to bring an Apple, Windows, or Chromebook as their primary device. Given the extensive hours spent in class taking notes, completing homework, and working on projects, we have established a set of minimum requirements to ensure that your child is optimally prepared for learning on campus.
Requirements
- Full Keyboard
- Mac, Windows, or Chromebook in Good Working Order
- Less then 4 years old
It is imperative for your child to be equipped to take notes in class and learn proper typing skills using a standard keyboard layout. Students who rely solely on a touchscreen device may face disadvantages in keeping up with note-taking and completing coursework throughout the school year. Additionally, it is crucial for students to arrive at school with a computer in good working condition, as the school's resources are dedicated to repairing any issues prior to the start of classes. The beginning of the school year is a busy time, and having a functional computer is essential for your child's experience at Shawnigan.
While we do not mandate that students acquire a new computer, bringing a device that is less than four years old ensures that it is likely to remain functional throughout the academic year. Older computers may struggle to receive the latest security updates or operating systems, and repairs may not be promptly available if needed. Therefore, while not mandatory, bringing a newer device can help ensure that your child's computing needs are met effectively throughout their time at Shawnigan.
Considering the diverse range of classes offered at Shawnigan, it may be advantageous for your child to bring a laptop that aligns with their academic pursuits. For instance, students interested in Graphic Design may find it beneficial to have an iPad or Mac laptop, as these are commonly used tools in class. Similarly, classes such as Computer Programming or Robotics may have specific requirements, particularly in senior years. Therefore, when signing up for these courses, it is advisable for your child to review the curriculum and potentially engage in discussions with the teacher to ensure they are adequately prepared with the appropriate technology for their chosen subjects. This proactive approach can help optimize your child's learning experience and ensure they have the necessary tools to succeed in their academic endeavors at Shawnigan.
