Rowing Donation

A generous gift from Rogers Communications

Shawnigan Lake School's rowing program is looking forward to a bright future.

On Friday evening, the rowing community gathered in the Frank Read Crew House to kick off the 57th annual Shawnigan Regatta. Attendees included North Cowichan Mayor Jon Lefebure and members of the National Rowing team, who plan to train on Shawnigan Lake in advance of the 2020 Olympic Games.

As part of the celebrations, Phil Lind, Vice Chairman of Rogers Communications, announced a major gift to Shawnigan Rowing, made in honour of his friend, the late Jim Shaw ’77.

“Jim was an extraordinary guy, very smart, great fun, and extraordinarily dedicated to the school,” Lind said.

With a strategic planning process already underway, Shawnigan Rowing is now moving into a new cycle of excellence. It is expected that the significant contribution from Rogers Communications will allow for some exciting renovations to the Frank Read Crew House, as well as the purchase of new rowing shells.

More than 600 rowers participated in the 2018 Shawnigan Regatta, with an army of coaches and volunteers contributing to another hugely successful weekend.

Shawnigan rowers also showed some of the strength building within the program, headlined by a fantastic junior girls crew that earned a series of podium finishes, including a pair of first-place showings.
