Summer sporting success

Shawnigan athletes at home and away
With a new year of athletic pursuits on the horizon, Shawnigan is looking back on noteworthy achievements from the summer.

From local rugby pitches to distant rinks and fields, elite student athletes continued to superbly represent the School, while also competing for province and country.

Hosted in the Cowichan Valley, the BC Summer Games saw a number of Shawnigan athletes competing on the School's fields as part of the Girls Rugby Sevens competition. The home field advantage proved valuable, as Team Vancouver Island-Central Coast won gold. Coached by Shawnigan staff Shannon Atkins and Dani Robb, the squad also included Sammy L., Mikayla B., Sydney H., Chloe S., and Maggie B.

A genuine standout, Maggie B. earned the W.R. Bennett Award for Athletic Excellence for the entire games.

Elsewhere, Gracie M. and Chloe S. played for Team BC's Under-16 squad at the National Rugby Festival, while Kiara S. and Sammy L. joined the U-17 team. On the boys side, Owen P. and Ryan S. played for BC's U-15 team, while Nathan G. played U-17 and Brenner K. played U-19.

Meanwhile, field hockey standouts Sophie M. and Birkley A. competed for British Columbia, earning silver medals at national tournament in Toronto.

On the links, incoming Grade 8 student Adam H. qualified for and competed in the U-15, U-17, and U-19 BCGA Provincial Golf Championships in Kamloops.
