The School’s first-ever inter-house spelling bee turned out to be a loud, lively, and high-spirited affair, much to the surprise and pleasure of organizers and staff.
“So much energy... Who knew a spelling bee would cause such excitement and noise?” commented Mrs. Boudreau, spelling bee moderator. “I think it was more successful and fun than we had anticipated.”
Indictment, genealogy, brouhaha, and facsimile: just some of the challenging words thrown at Senior and Junior School contestants under the watchful eyes of judges, Mr. Connolly and Mrs. Lupton.
The old gym was a hive of activity Jan. 17 when the entire school turned out to loudly support their House-selected delegates. Some competitors came decked out in vibrant outfits showcasing house colours, including one particularly colourful Junior, Hayley T., from Renfrew House. Such team spirit!
Only slightly rattled by the cacophony, Mrs. Boudreau started to spell a word instead of giving a definition, and Mr. Connolly had to take a drumstick away from an enthusiastic student in order to concentrate on his judging duties!
“As always, the kids supported their House reps with gusto,” said Mr. Clinton-Baker. “There was a good feeling of camaraderie, and the students were, as always, respectful toward the other competitors.”
Nic W. and Clara L. went head-to-head in the senior category, with Clara the winner. In the Junior category, Hayley T. prevailed. Renfrew, Groves’ and Lake’s Houses tied for points which will accumulate toward our final Inter-house Challenge Cup at term’s end.
A second annual spelling bee is anticipated for 2021, given the success of the inaugural event. Can you spell tour de force?
Did you know? Once a contestant has started to spell out a word, they are not permitted to change or re-sequence any letters already spoken aloud.
