Personal Purpose Workshop

Shawnigan community gathers for an interactive experience
The entire Shawnigan community, including students and Administrative, Educational and Operational staff, had the rare opportunity to gather as a whole on Monday afternoon for a special interactive workshop.

Chair of the Board Fiona Macfarlane invited Jeff Stier, leader of Ernst and Young’s Purpose Realized Performance Practice in North America, to help us discover our own personal north star though his workshop entitled “Discover and Lead with your Personal Purpose.” He emphasized the way in which having a personal purpose can lead to clarity and fulfillment, sharing stories from his own life to illustrate this point. He then guided us through a time of storytelling in pairs, and helped us assess and transform those experiences into vision statements.

By the end of the session, we had each developed our own personal purpose statement. Several students bravely took up Mr. Stier’s challenge to share their statement with the whole School at the end of the workshop. Seeing students stand up in the midst of their classmates to share their unique goal and vision for the future was a powerful and inspirational experience.

Staff had the chance to follow up with their Advisees during Advisor meetings on Wednesday afternoon, where each student shared their own personal purpose statement with the group.

We are grateful for this experience and know that many students and staff have developed or clarified their vision for both today and the future.
