ISABC Pro-D

First Peoples’ Principles of Learning
Shawnigan Lake School is the Vancouver Island host venue for this year’s ISABC Pro-D Day. Representatives from 22 schools in BC (including independent and public schools beyond the ISABC network) and over 100 delegates have gathered to learn from educators, community leaders and elders about First Peoples’ Principles of Learning. The guests were welcomed by a grade 11 student who is a Dene First Nations woman from the Sahtu region in the Northwest Territories, who acknowledged the land on which we have gathered for the day. Delegates then dispersed to their various workshops. It feels appropriate that today is Valentine’s Day because much of our learning journey will result from the heart-felt stories shared by the invited knowledge keepers. As they gift us with their stories and wisdom, we as educators will strive to apply new perspectives and other ways of knowing as sources of information in our classrooms and beyond.

We acknowledge with respect the Coast Salish Peoples on whose traditional lands and waterways we live, learn and play. We are grateful for the opportunity to share in this beautiful region, and we aspire to healthy and respectful relationships with those who have lived on and cared for these lands for millennia.
