February Sports Update

As we get closer to the end of the winter sports season and the beginning of the spring season, here is an update on how some of our teams have been doing.

SQUASH

On January 13, Shawnigan played host to nearly 100 participants from Vancouver, Victoria and the Cowichan Valley in the largest Squash BC Junior Silver Event ever. Five Shawnigan athletes won their events: Kaleb A. (Div. 1), Tony Z. (Div. 4)., Justin L. (Div. 7), Eliza H. (Div. 8), and Daniel H. (Div. 9).

BASKETBALL

Three Shawnigan basketball teams travelled to Alberta on the weekend of February 1-3 to face some interprovincial competition. The junior boys’ team attended the Junior Sabre Swoosh Invitational, hosted by Salisbury Composite High School in Sherwood Park, while the Grade 9 boys’ and girls’ teams competed in their respective divisions at the Centurion Classic, a cancer fundraiser hosted by Riverbend Junior High School in Edmonton.

In addition to playing some great basketball, the Shawnigan teams were able to visit the Edmonton Oilers’ dressing room at Rogers Place, shop at the fabled West Edmonton Mall, and attend University of Alberta Pandas and Golden Bears basketball games, where they got to meet the coaches and experience post-game talks.

Now that they’re back, the junior boys are preparing to host the inaugural 2AA Junior Basketball Invitational Tournament on March 1-3. The tournament will bring together 16 junior boys teams representing smaller schools from all over BC for three days of intense competition.

The Grade 8/9 boys’ basketball team picked up a big win over Chemainus, pouring in 57 points in the victory. They are gearing up for the end-of-season tournament on February 9, hosted by Quamichan School in Duncan.

The senior girls’ basketball team repeated as gold medallists at the Independent Schools Athletic Association championships, hosted by Glenlyon Norfolk School in Victoria on February 2 and 3. All the players stepped up for the tournament, with outstanding performances from Selam C., Cassidy N., Caitlin P., and Kate R., who scored 129 points over three games to earn SLS Athlete of the Week honours. The girls finished their league season in an impressive second place.

ICE HOCKEY

U18 Prep girls’ ice hockey head coach Ms. Carly Haggard picked up her 100th win as a Canadian Sports School Hockey League coach as her team won four games at the Charlie Purdey Arena on the weekend of January 26-28. Alex N. picked up two shut outs, Morgan J. had 17 points (7 goals and 10 assists), and Zoe C. had 13 points (5 goals and 8 assists) as Shawnigan outscored their opponents 38-4.

The U17 Prep boys’ team played four games at the Rink Hockey Academy CSSHL Showcase in Winnipeg on February 2-5, picking up two wins, including a shutout for Stef K. over Prairie Hockey Academy and Lukas N.’s first-ever U17 start against the North Shore Warriors. Shawnigan dominated their game against Notre Dame, outshooting the Hounds 48-27, although the Notre Dame goalie proved all-but unbeatable.

ROWING

Shawnigan sent a strong contingent to the Kraken Erg indoor regatta at Brentwood College School on February 4. Shawnigan rowers performed well in the high school-age categories.

RUGBY

Seven Shawnigan rugby players have been selected to the Doug Tate XV in a two-match exhibition series against the University of Victoria Jutes (UVic’s freshman team). Doug Tate was a long-serving and highly regarded coach at UVic, and also coached at the national level. He is assembling this team — essentially an Island U18 Select side — to give the Jutes some extra games. UVic came away with the win when the teams squared off on January 27, and the teams will meet again at UVic on Saturday, February 10.

Shawnigan is represented on the Doug Tate XV by DJ B., Owen B., Finn G., Seb I., Aiden J., Jonty N. and Jackson P. Alumni Kale J. ’23 and Josh K. ’23 are members of the UVic Jutes.
