Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike

A funny, modern play

Some of Shawnigan's favourite student actors take a final bow as Theatre Performance 12 presents Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike

A comedic play written by Christopher Durang, 'Vanya' is loosely derived from the plays of Anton Chekhov.  And while some of the themes and jokes do reflect Chekhov's work, the play doesn't require any familiarity with the famed Russian dramatist.  Rather, it's a playful and witty character-driven story – complete with adult humour, meaty monologues, and contemporary disputes.

We begin with middle-aged siblings Vanya and Sonia, who wake up to the struggles one might expect of brother and sister living together, particularly those raised by overbearing parents.  When their sister (and benefactor) Masha enters with her boyfriend (Spike), the characters begin to clash.

For the six actors involved, it's one final chance to deliver in front of a Shawnigan audience.  Each cast member seems to have plenty of room to explore and play as they work through the conflicts that build over the course of the evening.

Directed by Morgan McLeod, 'Vanya' was originally scheduled to be performed in the Headmaster's backyard.  Due to rain in the forecast, however, Thursday and Friday's performances have been relocated to the Hugh Wilkinson Theatre.

Parents, staff, alumni and guests are encouraged to enjoy the Saturday performance.  The location of Saturday's final show is still to be determined.
